Anutin is the smartest cookie on the block. He’s stolen the PPs thunder by resigning over an issue which surely unites most Thais. There must be an electoral market amongst the profession middle classes for a conservative who is prepared to call out the Shinawatra circus while rejecting the radicalism of the PP. Maybe the overwhelming vote against Thaksin at the medical council was a bit of a straw in the wind to that effect.
I'm honestly not sure that it was a total coincidence that Anutin started packing up his office today just moments before the leaked call dropped, but regardless of whether he had advance notice this crisis gave him the perfect rationale to leave the government (which he was preparing to do anyway). Truly perfect timing. The party's rebranding as a stridently conservative force is looking smarter by the day.
I think that regardless of who Pheu Thai nominates as PM, the party is going to find it hard to even salvage the seats it has now if an election is called soon!
